Penfield, a partner with Casey, Gerry, Reed & Schenk, has experience in business, products liability, class actions, civil and environmental litigation.

The award recognizes "outstanding efforts above and beyond the call of duty' made by CASD members, President Benjamin C. Bunn said in a statement.

"With perseverance and foresight, Penfield took a leadership role in creating a unique program in which high school students compete for a college scholarship by entering an essay contest designed to increase their appreciation for the civil justice system," Bunn said in the statement.

Penfield previously worked for the Defenders Program of San Diego and as a professor of law at the University of San Diego School of Law.
