The city of San Diego is one of four cities in the nation that will be honored for its public and private partnership in the creation of its Family Justice Center. The National League of Cities will present the 2004 James C. Howland Award for Municipal Enrichment at a conference in Indianapolis, Ind., in December. The city will receive a cash award of $2,000 to be donated to a community, nonprofit organization selected by the city.

The center, which opened in October 2002, combines more than 120 domestic violence professionals from seven city and county agencies and 24 nonprofit organizations in one accessible building. The center also has a forensic medical unit that specializes in documenting and treating non-life threatening injuries from domestic violence. Next month, the center will open a new children’s facility to coordinate child abuse and domestic violence services in one location.
