fiberglass insulation caused the workers to itch. Working with fiberglass insulation for a single day could cause painful itching for a week or more. The microscopic particles became embedded in the skin and could not be removed by showering, nor could a worker protect himself by special clothing. As a result, manufacturers, such as Owens-Corning, switched to producing asbestos despite the known harsh consequences. Before Owens-Corning Fiberglass was in the asbestos manufacturing business, they feared that the unions would stop using their fiberglass insulation products, so they gathered a "weapon-in-reserve," a never released bibliography covering 500 - 600 pages of literature on asbestosis. Years later, they too began to manufacture and sell asbestos insulating products. When the asbestos was left in place, it did not present a problem, but when it was moved around for any reason, asbestos particles would fill the air and be breathed in by those in the area. Companies such as Owens-Corning Fiberglass feared they might be forced to revert to fiberglass use because of the dangers of asbestos. Once they invested in the manufacture of asbestos insulation in the late 1950's, the profits had become too great to return to the known, safer fiberglass insulation. |
