What does the Jones Act cover?
The Jones Act applies to seamen and other shipboard employees, and provides that if an employee is injured aboard ship, the employer must provide the injured employee with transportation home, and wages while aboard ship. The employer must also cover the injured employee’s medical expenses, and in cases of negligence, possibly damages for pain and suffering.

Is there a time limit for filing Jones Act claims?
The statute of limitations, the time limit for filing a claim under theJones Act case is three years from the date of the injury. If you are filing a claim against a vessel that is either owned, operated, or contracted by the US government, the time limit may be much shorter. If you believe you have a claim, you should contact an experienced Jones Act attorney as soon as possible to protect your rights?

I was injured working the ship’s laundry. Can I still file a Jones Act claim?
If you worked more than 30% of your working hours on the ship in any capacity (cook, bartender, housekeeping, entertainment, etc), you are regarded as a seaman, and can file a Jones Act claim.

What does the Death on the High Seas Act cover?
If you have lost a loved one who was serving on a ship, you may be eligible for compensation under the Death on the High Seas Act. If your loved one died as a result of an unseaworthy vessel or other employer’s negligence, you and your family may file for compensation under the Death on the High Seas Act.
