Metal-on-Metal Hip Implants
Casey Gerry is continues to lead the way in hip implant litigation, having filed cases against the manufacturers of the recently recalled, DePuy metal-on-metal ASR hip implants, and other similar systems. Metal-on-Metal devices are hip implants where both the ball and socket components are made of metal. These metal implants have been used in total hip replacement surgeries and hip resurfacing procedures.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the manufacturer of the DePuy ASR™ XL Acetabular System voluntarily recalled their product citing unusually high revision rates. Similarly, other metal-on-metal hip implants have exceptionally high failure rates, including the Zimmer Durom Acetabular Component which suspended its sales in July 2008.
A recent British Medical Journal reported that patients who received metal-on-metal implants were more likely to require repeat surgery than those who received traditional implants. Patients with metal-on-metal hip systems are also at increased risk for a buildup of metallic debris in their soft tissues, as particles separating from the device are distributed throughout their body. This process, known as metallosis, causes bone and tissue loss, resulting in the loosening and ultimate failure of the device.
