FDA Warning About Tren Products: Bodybuilding Supplement Failed to Disclose Risk of Serious Liver and Kidney Damage and Gynecomastia

In a warning letter dated July 27, 2009, the Public Health Service of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advised American Cellular Labs, the maker of the popular “TREN-Xtreme” family of products was in violation of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act due to misrepresentation of the nature of their products as safe and effective “dietary supplements”.  These products include:

• TREN-Xtreme
• MASS Xtreme
• ESTRO Xtreme
• AH-89-Xtreme
• HMG Xtreme
• MMA-3 Xtreme
• VNS-9 Xtreme
• TT-40-Xtreme

The products indicated in the lawsuit include TREN supplements marketed under the names:

• Extreme TREN
• TREN Xtreme
• TREN-250
• Tokyo TREN
• Trenbolen

The FDA concluded that the active ingredients contained in these products “do not meet the definition of a dietary supplement in section 201(ff) of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (the Act) (21 U.S.C. § 321 (ff)”. Furthermore they “are intended to affect the structure or function of the body by, among other things, building muscle, increasing strength, and affecting the levels of estrogens and androgens in the body” which according to the FDA meet the definition of drugs.

On July 24, 2009, lawyers in Orange County, California filed a class action lawsuit against American Cellular Labs, as well as against Nutrition Zone Enterprises Inc., a chain of stores that markets and sells TREN products over the counter, that alleges the companies intentionally misrepresented and failed to disclose some of the TREN family of products caused health problems including but not limited to:

• Gynecomastia (development of hard, painful breast tissue)
• Elevated Liver Enzymes
• Kidney Damage
• Stroke
• High Bad Cholesterol
• Loss of Libido
• Low Testosterone Levels
• High Estrogen Levels
