FDA Issues Urgent Health Alert for ZicamWhat is Zicam?Zicam is a group of non-prescription homeopathic products for relief of upper respiratory symptoms of colds, coughs, and allergies. Matrixx Initiatives of Scottsdale AZ markets twenty products under the Zicam name. On June 16, 2009, the US Food and Drug Administration, FDA announced that three of these products,
Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel, Zicam Cold Remedy Gel Swabs, and Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size, pose a serious health risk to users. It recommended that anyone using Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel, Zicam Cold Remedy Gel Swabs, or Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size immediately stop using them, and discard any remaining product.
All three of these products are used intranasally, applied directly to the tissues inside the nose. One of the principal ingredients in these Zicam products is zinc gluconate, described on the product label as “Zincum Gluconicum 2X.” In a letter to Matrixx, the FDA noted that in there are reports published in scientific journals that some zinc salts can damage olfactory function (the ability to smell) both in humans and in animals.
What health problems are associated with Zicam? The FDA, which monitors non-prescription product, has learned of more than 130 cases in which users of Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel, Zicam Cold Remedy Gel Swabs, and Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size suffered from anosmia, the loss of sense of smell. In some cases the loss of sense of smell can last very long, or even be permanent and irreversible. Some users have also lost their sense of taste.
The FDA’s compliance office also wrote Matrixx that “the agency is aware that Matrixx appears to have more than 800 reports related to loss of sense of smell associated with Zicam Cold Remedy intranasal products.”
What should you do if you have used one of these Zicam products?
If you or a loved one has used Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel, Zicam Cold Remedy Gel Swabs, or Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size, and has suffered loss your sense of smell or taste or other symptoms or problems after you’ve used any products that contain zinc and are applied into the nose, the FDA recommends that you contact your doctor or other health care professional as soon as possible.
Should you contact a Zicam attorney? If you or a loved one used Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel, Zicam Cold Remedy Gel Swabs, or Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size, you should contact a Zicam attorney immediately for review of a potential claim against the manufacturer. There are deadlines set by laws which regulate the filing of lawsuits called statutes of limitation, which vary state by state.
